Performers include Faculty Artists Jason Eklund, horn; Zoran Jakovcic, viola; Alexander Kobrin, piano; Dr. Lisa Oberlander, clarinet; Dr. Alexander Pershounin, bass; Sergiu Schwartz, violin; Wendy Warner, cello; Dr. Ron Wirt, bassoon.
Roberto Díaz, viola
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2011, 7:30 PM
A violist of international reputation, Roberto Díaz's playing has been lauded by the Philadelphia Inquirer as going "...far beyond mere technical mastery and full-bodied tone and enter[ing] the rarer realm of artistry..." Mr. Díaz offers an all-Brahms program including the two Op. 120 sonatas and a transcription of the Op. 78 violin sonata. He is accompanied by pianist Kwan Yi whose "...ravishing control and pitch-perfect clarity proved big gestures aren't needed to make big music." (Chicago Sun Times)
Join Faculty Artist Wendy Warner, cello, in an evening of beautiful French music: Poulenc and Franck Sonatas for Cello and Piano. Wendy is joined by Faculty Artists Yien Wang, piano; Dr. Lisa Oberlander, clarinet; and Zoran Jakovcic, viola. Additionally, Faculty Composer Dr. Fred Cohen’s new work for Clarinet, Viola, Cello and Piano, Á propos de l'amité, is premiered. Wendy Warner’s appointment to the artist faculty of the Schwob School of Music has been made possible in part by a generous gift from Leah D. Hamer.
Fine Arts String Quartet
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2012, 4:00 PM
One of the most distinguished ensembles in chamber music today, the Fine Arts String Quartet joins the Schwob School of Music for an evening performance as part of its 65th anniversary tour. Featuring music by Mozart, Glass, and Schubert, the quartet is joined by Faculty Artist Wendy Warner, cello, in a performance of Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major.
Grammy Award-winner David Russell returns to Columbus for an evening of music for the classical guitar. Russell is widely considered one of the world's greatest living guitarists. He has performed in every major concert venue throughout the world to great acclaim.
Faculty Artist Sergiu Schwartz, The William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Music, has garnered worldwide critical acclaim as "one of the best violinists of his generation" (Le Soleil, Canada). Fanfare Magazine notes that “Schwartz’s CD should provide a great sense of optimism that a younger violinist still commands such assured rhetoric and expressive resources. Heifetz, Milstein, Oistrakh, Isaac Stern, Francescatti – they all come to mind." He is joined by Faculty Artist Alexander Kobrin, The L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano, a First Place/Gold Medal winner of international piano competitions including Van Cliburn, Busoni, Mamatsu, and Glasgow competitions, critically acclaimed for his technique, artistry, and commanding virtuosity. The program includes violin and piano masterworks by Brahms, Faure, and Falla.
