8/19/14 Congratulations to CSU Trombone Studio Alum Jessica Butler for her appointment to the faculty of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale teaching low brass!
8/6/14 Congratulations to the members of the CSU trombone ensemble who performed so beautifully in Hong Kong this summer! It was a farewell performance for Trey English and Alex Tanner, two music education graduates that will attend Baylor university and the University of Texas at Austin respectively in the fall to pursue Master's degrees in performance. Cathy Schule will attend the University of Southern California to begin her DMA.

8/22/13 Guest artists for 2013-2014 announced! Gerry Pagano visits us from the Saint Louis Symphony for a recital and master class, and James Markey returns to CSU to record a solo CD (including a track with the CSU Trombone Choir!) and to do a recital and master class. Dates are to the left under the navigation.
5/13/13 Congratulations to the CSU trombonists accepted to summer programs! Trey English will be at Hot Springs and the Northwestern summer program with Michael Mulcahy. Cathy Schule will be at Marrowstone and also Hot Springs. Maria Menendez will be at Interlochen as a counselor.

3/8/13 The Kickstarter campaign was a HUGE success! We blew past our $3500 goal in the first 48 hours and then surpassed our stretch goal of $5500, which will be enough to pay for the commission of the new trombone octet piece by Tony DiLorenzo which we will premier in June at the ITF! 2/13/13 The CD is finally in the can!
11/1/12 Congratulations to Mark Spradley who won the state round of the MTNA Competition Young Artists Brass division! Trey English placed second and will be the alternate in the upcoming regional round. Way to go Mark and Trey!
7/30/12 Announcing the CSU Trombone Studio's 2012-2013 guest artists: The Center City Brass Quintet and Ko-Ichiro Yamamoto visit to record a CD and perform a concert October 1-7. Nicole Abissi will present a shared recital with CSU's Horn Professor Anna Dodd on October 14th. Charlie Vernon visits November 4-11 to record and perform with the CSU Trombone Ensemble, and will also perform Wim Bex' new piece "Vademecum" with the CSU Wind Ensemble. Canadian Brass perform on November 26. Joseph Alessi visits to record with the CSU Trombone Ensemble January 30-February 1, 2013, which will finish the recording phase of our six-semester guest artist recording project. Jazz great Conrad Herwig visits March 28-29, 2013.
10/10/11 We are excited to welcome the trombone section from the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra to our campus May 29-June 1, 2012 for a recording project!
8/7/11 Announcing the CSU Trombone Studio's 2011-2012 guest artists: Dr. Denson Paul Pollard visits us from the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra November 18-20 to record with the CSU Trombone Ensemble for our upcoming CD release, and to perform with the ensemble on their fall concert on November 20, 2011. Also coming to record for the CD and to perform with the ensemble in the spring semester are George Curran (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra) and Bill Thomas (Tonhalle-Orchester, Zurich - formerly with the Atlanta Symphony). Mr. Curran and Mr. Thomas will perform with the CSU Trombone Ensemble on April 29, and will be here for the recording project until May 3.
7/7/11 The Schwob School of Music at CSU is proud to announce that the International Trombone Festival will be held here in Columbus, GA June 26-29, 2013! Dr. Palmer will serve as the host of this fine international event, bringing several hundred trombonists together from all over the world to the exceptional facilities of the Schwob School of Music and RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Mark your calendar now: ITF 2013 will be June 26-29 at the Schwob School of Music in Columbus GA!
6/21/11 A big summer for the CSU Trombone Studio! Congratulations to CSU trombonists Mark Spradley who was a finalist in the Southeast Trombone Symposium solo competition and to Alex Tanner who received honorable mention! Trey English performed on a masterclass at the National Brass Symposium and many of the other students attended. Eric Hale will join Trey this summer at the Sewanee Music Festival. Greg Brandt and Mark Spradley are participants in the Summer Trombone Workshop in Philadelphia this week. Later in the summer a number of the students will attend the International Trombone Festival in Nashville and audit the Alessi Seminar in Tuscaloosa.
4/20/11 The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents has just approved the new MASTER'S DEGREE IN PERFORMANCE at CSU's Schwob School of Music, which will begin in the Fall of 2011. Please see the link on the left for more information about graduate assistantships.
4/2/11 Graduating Senior Justin Waller has accepted a Graduate Assistantship to pursue his Master's in trombone performance at Stony Brook. Congratulations, Justin!
3/24/11 Ko-ichiro Yamamoto (principal trombone, Seattle Symphony) will be at CSU May 24-27 doing a premier recording of a significant new piece for trombone solo and trombone ensemble accompaniment, as part of the CSU Trombone Studio's multi-year CD project with guest artists.
1/9/11 Registration for the 2011 Southeast Trombone Symposium is now open!
12/14/10 Announcing some great news for the Southeast Trombone Symposium... S.E. Shires has announced that they will give TWO instruments as competition prizes this year, instead of just one! For more information about the S.E. Shires Solo Trombone Competition and the new Orchestral Excerpts Competition, please visit the STS page. Registration will open in January, and the 2011 Southeast Trombone Symposium will be held here at the Schwob School of Music at CSU June 14-18, 2010.
12/13/10 The CSU Trombone Ensemble recording project featuring guest soloists has officially begun! James Markey was with us for four days last week to rehearse and record two pieces with the ensemble. This, in addition to playing a beautiful recital and teaching a lesson to the entire CSU trombone studio, made for an amazing experience for the students. His amazing playing, coupled with his positive, encouraging attitude will be something that the students will remember for a long time. It's too bad everyone will have to wait a few years for the CD to be finished! We still have to bring in a whole lot more amazing trombonists for the project through the 2012-2013 academic year! We're saving Joe Alessi and Charlie Vernon for last...

11/4/10 Congratulations to Sophomore Trey English, Honorable Mention in the state round of the Music Teachers National Association young artist competition. Trey placed third behind two graduate students, one of which is a fellow Schwob School of Music student in the trumpet studio.
8/13/10 Columbus State University graduate Andrew Shelton has been appointed to the faculty of the University of North Carolina Asheville, where he teaches trombone. Shelton ('10) earned his Masters Degree from CSU and his Bachelor's from Mars Hill College in North Carolina.
6/26/10 Columbus State University graduate Jessica Ducharme won the S.E. Shires Solo Competition at the 2010 Southeast Trombone Symposium. Her prize was a custom Shires trombone, which she was able to put together along with the Shires staff at the Symposium. Ducharme ('09) is currently the trombone Graduate Assistant at the University of Iowa under Dr. David Gier.
5/26/10 The CSU Trombone studio is pleased to announce the following guest artists for the 2010-2011 academic year: Jim Markey (NY Philharmonic, Ko-Ichiro Yamamoto (Seattle Symphony), Brad Edwards (University of South Carolina) and Jonathan Whitaker (University of Alabama). 5/25/10 New video clips of the CSU trombone ensembles and of Dr. Palmer's recital have been added to the Clips and Photos section.
5/4/10 Dr. Palmer's transcription of three Gesualdo Motets have been published by Cherry Classics and are now available. You can see a performance clip from one of the Motets in the clips and photos section or in HD on YouTube.

10/19/09 Dr. Palmer has been appointed to the staff of the International Trombone Festival, and will serve in the role of Recording Coordinator.
10/8/09 CSU Artists in Residence Colin Williams, Bill Thomas and George Curran from the Atlanta Symphony are joined by Eric Bubacz on tuba and Dr. Palmer in a masterclass presentation of low brass orchestral excerpts. Video clips of the class have been added.

8/18/09 Announcing the first annual Southeast Trombone Symposium - June 22-26, 2010. The Symposium is a 5-day trombone workshop hosted at CSU, which includes the S.E. Shires Solo Trombone Competition. The winner of the competition will receive a custom Shires trombone. The Symposium Faculty are Colin Williams, Bill Thomas, George Curran and Bradley Palmer. More information will be posted on the STS page as the details are finalized.

7/20/09 Graduating Senior Joshua Kearney has been hired as a band director in the public schools south of Nashville, TN, near his home town.
7/3/09 Colin Williams, Bill Thomas and George Curran named Artists in Residence for the 2009-2010 academic year at CSU. These Atlanta Symphony Trombonists just finished a week-long recording session in CSU's Legacy Hall, and will be releasing the CD later in 2009. More information on their activities as Artists in Residence in the Schwob School of Music will be coming soon.
6/16/09 Dr. Palmer invited to perform with the Cramer Choir at the 2010 International Trombone Festival in Austin, TX.
5/10/09 Graduating Senior Jessica Ducharme will attend the University of Iowa in the Fall with a Graduate Fellowship and Teaching Assistantship.

4/13/09 Charlie Vernon's residency has come and gone, and what an incredible week it was. Charlie gave private lesson to all of the CSU trombone students, coached the two trombone ensembles and performed an amazing concert at the end of the week. Video clips of the performance have been posted!
3/18/09 Links to the live audio feed from the Eastern Trombone Workshop have been posted. Click here to listen live to any of the events, especially the 6:00 PM performance of the CSU Trombone Choir on Saturday night, March 21. After the Workshop, all of the audio will be archived and can be enjoyed via the web. On Saturday, March 21 at 6:00, the CSU Trombone Choir will perform with Jonathan Warburton and Charlie Vernon as their soloists, and will present two world premier performances.
2/12/09 New video posted! These are some videos that I recorded in Legacy Hall over the last few weeks with some of my trombone colleagues from the Southeast. In addition to Dr. Palmer, the performers include three Atlanta Symphony trombonists, and a number of other area professionals. The Debussy quintets are well-arranged and work nicely for 5 trombones, and the trombone octets by Hartley and Bach are must-see (and hear!) material.
1/28/09 The CSU Trombone Choir will present the world premier of Brad Edwards' "Boneweek Fanfare VI" at the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington DC. The piece was written in celebration of the International Trombone Week, April 5-12, 2009.
The Trombone Studio at Columbus State University celebrates the ITW with Charlie Vernon's performance on the very first day of the ITW, April 5 at 4:00 PM in Legacy Hall. This is the first public US performance scheduled during the ITW. Tickets are only $5!!!!
CSU closes it's celebration of the ITW with Hazel Geissinger's recital on April 11 at 4:00 PM in Studio Theater.

11/3/08 CSU graduate student Andrew Shelton has recorded the 2009 GMEA All-state trombone etudes, and video has been posted for anyone preparing them to study.
11/3/08 New page added! A page with information on Charlie Vernon's residency at Columbus State University has been added to this site.
11/1/08 The CSU Wind Ensemble recording "Visions" featuring Joe Alessi has received three Grammy nominations. The recording is available through Summit Records.
10/25/08 The Phil Smith residency is finished. The Wind Ensemble made another fantastic recording with him, and the concert was something we will remember for a long time. Phil's interaction with music students at CSU will leave a lasting impression. Video of the concert will be posted to the web soon.
10/10/08 The CSU Trombone Choir will feature guest soloists Jonathan Warburton and Charlie Vernon on its performance at the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington DC on March 20, 2009.
