General Information and Fees

The 2014 ISSAC competition will take place on October 23-26, 2014 in Legacy Hall at Columbus State University's Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Georgia, USA. The competition involves a pre-recorded Screening Round and three live rounds: Preliminary Round, Semi-Final Round, and a Final Round. The Screening Round will determine a maximum of forty (40) competitors who will travel to compete in the live round(s) of ISSAC's competition in Columbus, GA. From the forty competitors who will perform in ISSAC's Preliminary Round, a maximum of twelve (12) competitors will be selected to advance in the competition and perform in the Semi-Final Round. The Semi-Final Round will determine a maximum of six (6) finalists who will perform in the Final Round for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. The ISSAC judges reserve the right to choose fewer than the maximum number of competitors for any round of the competition and to award fewer than three (3) prizes or no prizes at all. The ISSAC judges also reserve the right to expand the number of competitors who advance to the Preliminary Round and the Semi-Final Round, however the Final Round must remain at a maximum of six (6) competitors.

*Please note: If August 15, 2014 shows less than thirty (30) paid Preliminary Round competitors, the competition may be cancelled and Preliminary Round fees refunded. If the competition should be cancelled, Kenneth Tse's masterclass and Vincent David's recital will still take place on Friday, October 24 as well as Mr. David's masterclass on Saturday, October 25.

Prizes

             1st prize: $3,000 cash award + a professional alto saxophone model PMXA-67RGL from
                        P. Mauriat + featured soloist on the world premiere CD recording of Dan Trueman's
                        new concerto for alto saxophone and percussion ensemble + a gift certificate from
                        Woodwind/Brasswind + assorted prizes from Silver Key Music (aka The Tuning C.D.)

             2nd prize: $2,000 cash award + a gift certificate from Woodwind/Brasswind + assorted prizes
                        from Silver Key Music (aka The Tuning C.D.)

             3rd prize: $1,000 cash award + a gift certificate from Woodwind/Brasswind + assorted prizes
                        from Silver Key Music (aka The Tuning C.D.)

             4th, 5th, and 6th prizes: TBA

Eligibility

Eligible ISSAC competitors cannot reach the age of 30 on or before October 26, 2014. Eligible competitors have a birth date of October 27,1984 or later.

All competition applicants must verify his/her exact age with a valid driver's license or passport. Any competition applicant who does not show proof of age or who will reach the age of 30 on or before October 26, 2014 will be disqualified. Applicants must provide age verification (via a photocopy or a scanned .pdf image) when registering for the Screening Round. (See Guidelines for Entering the Competition below)

General Competition Guidelines

  • ISSAC competition applicants must consult the Competition Repertoire page and carefully observe the compulsory and optional repertoire and all timings.

  • All ISSAC competition applicants must begin by completing the application for the Screening Round by June 15, 2014.

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • All fees are non-refundable (Unless the competition part of ISSAC should be cancelled: if August 15, 2014 shows less than thirty (30) paid Preliminary Round competitors, the competition may be cancelled and Preliminary Round fees refunded.)

  • All expenses, including pianist fees, lodging, and transportation to and from the competition are the responsibility of the competitors. (A list of hotels offering discounted rates for the event will be posted on this website soon.)

  • ISSAC staff pianists are available for hire for the Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final Rounds of the competition. The hiring of an ISSAC staff pianist is an additional expense that is separate from any competition fees. Competitors who require an ISSAC staff pianist must be available for rehearsal in Columbus, GA on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Details regarding the procedure for hiring an ISSAC staff pianist will be posted on this website soon.

Guidelines for Entering the Competition

All performers who wish to be in ISSAC's competition must first complete the application for the Screening Round by June 15, 2014. The Screening Round requires a $50 fee, a recording, and verification that the applicant will not have reached the age of 30 on or before October 26, 2014.

By mid-July, 2014 the results of the Screening Round will be posted, announcing the forty (40) competitors who will advance to the Preliminary Round of ISSAC's competition. These competitors must then complete the competition registration process by paying an additional fee of $235 by August 15, 2014.


Screening Round registration includes:

  • Payment of $50 fee (This fee is non-refundable however anyone who pays the $50 Screening Round fee is not required to pay the $50 General Admission fee in order to attend ISSAC).
  • Submission of a live, unedited mp3 or CD recording of the applicant performing the 5th movement of the Tableaux de Provence by Maurice and the 1st movement of the Muczynski Sonata, *both with piano accompaniment. (please see the Competition Repertoire page for details.)
  • Verification of the applicant's age (must be born on or after October 27, 1984). More details regarding age verification appear above in the Eligibility section.
  • Applicant's full name, phone number, and email address (a confirmation email will be sent when all of your application materials have been received).

*All Screening Round materials must be received by midnight on June 15, 2014 (12:00am EST on June 16, 2014). Please understand that this means ALL parts of the Screening Round registration must be received by the above date/time ($50 payment, recording, and age verification). Screening Round applications that are incomplete or incorrect will not be accepted. Screening Round applicants will receive email confirmation from Amy Griffiths, ISSAC Director, when his/her application is complete and accepted.


There are two methods to submit Screening Round materials:

  1. Submission of recording + age verification via email (electronic submission)
    • Address an email to griffiths_amy@columbusstate.edu
    • The email subject line should be: ISSAC, Applicant's Full Name
    • Save the mp3 file(s) as "Applicant's Full Name" and attach to the email
    • Save the age verification image (scanned image of valid driver's license or passport) as a .pdf file titled, "Applicant's Full Name" and attach to the email
    • In addition to the recorded materials and the age document, applicants must also pay the $50 Screening Round fee either by submitting payment electronically or by mailing a check in the amount of $50 (payable to ISSAC/Columbus State University Foundation, Inc.; please write your email address and phone number on the check) to:

    • Make a CD containing the required Screening Round recordings and write the Applicant's Full Name clearly on the CD
    • Photocopy the applicant's valid driver's license or passport
    • Fill out a check in the amount of $50, made payable to ISSAC/ Columbus State University Foundation, Inc.
    • Please include your full name, telephone number, and email address (you may write this information on the page that includes your driver's license/passport copy or write this information on the payment check)

*As this deadline is not a postmark deadline, but a strict deadline for all materials to be received by midnight on June 15, 2014, applicants are encouraged to submit all materials well in advance of June 15.

Screening Round registration closes at midnight on June 15, 2014 (which is 12:00am EST on June 16, 2014). Screening Round applicants will be notified of his/her status in the competition by July 15, 2014.

Guidelines for the Live Rounds of the Competition (Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final)

The Screening Round will determine a maximum of forty (40) competitors who will travel to compete in the Preliminary Round of ISSAC's competition in Columbus, GA.

The Preliminary Round competitors will be announced in July, 2014. Registration for the Preliminary Round will become available by July 15, 2014 and all advancing competitors will then have until August 15, 2014 to complete the registration for the Preliminary Round.

Preliminary Round registration involves payment of additional $235
($195 competition fee + $40 for the score and solo part to the compulsory Trueman Concerto*).

The Preliminary Round will determine a maximum of twelve (12) competitors will be selected to advance in the competition and perform in the Semi-Final Round.

The Semi-Final Round will determine a maximum of six (6) finalists who will perform in the Final Round for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes.

ISSAC Judging Panel

All rounds of ISSAC's competition will be judged by a panel of professional saxophonists from Canada, Asia, and the United States. Throughout the competition (October 23-26, 2014) competitors may not approach any of the judges for any reason. At the end of the entire competition after all prizes have been awarded, the judges may elect to take questions from competitors. Please understand that any communication with the judges is strictly at the discretion of each individual judge and he or she may simply not wish to discuss any aspect of the competition. The ISSAC judges reserve the right to choose fewer than the maximum number of competitors for any round of the competition and to award fewer than three (3) prizes or no prizes at all.
