2014 ISSAC Competition Repertoire

ISSAC header May 2014

Below are the repertoire requirements for each round of ISSAC's competition. All repertoire that has piano accompaniment must be performed with piano accompaniment. All repertoire must be performed on the specific saxophone for which it was composed unless otherwise noted. Staff pianists are available for hire for the live rounds of the competition. The competition involves a Screening Round and then three (3) live rounds (Preliminary Round, Semi-Final Round, and Final Round). All performers who wish to be in ISSAC's competition must first apply for the Screening Round, the results of which will determine forty (40) competitors who will travel to Columbus, GA to perform in the live round(s) of the competition. The deadline for submission of all Screening Round application materials is June 15, 2014.

Screening Round: This round requires a recording of live, unedited performances (with piano accompaniment) of both of the selections listed below. Recordings are to be submitted as mp3 files or in CD format. Submissions must include the applicant's full name. Please visit the Competition Information page for specific instructions regarding the submission of materials for the Screening Round.

  • Paule Maurice: Tableaux de Provence, movement V. Le Cabridan (Lemoine)
  • Robert Muczynski: Sonata, op. 29, movement I. Andante maestoso (Schirmer)

 

Screening Round materials must be submitted by June 15, 2014. For more details, please visit the Competition Information and Registration pages.

Preliminary Round (1st live round held at ISSAC on October 23-24, 2014):

  • Alfred Desenclos: ONLY the Prélude and Finale movements from Prélude, Cadence et Finale (Leduc)

  • Choose selections from the following to total 7 minutes:

              - Paul Bonneau: Caprice en forme de valse (alto saxophone) (Leduc)

              - Sigfrid Karg-Elert: any ONE of the Twenty-Five Caprices (to be played on any saxophone) (Southern)

              - Christian Lauba: any ONE of the Neuf Études, Book 1 (alto saxophone) (Leduc)

              - Christian Lauba: Worksong (alto saxophone; to be performed without CD) (Leduc)

              - J-M Londeix: any ONE of the Nouvelles Études Variées (to be played on any saxophone) (Leduc)

              - Ryo Noda: Maï (alto saxophone) (Leduc)

              - Niccolo Paganini: any ONE of the 24 Caprices, op. 1 (any arrangement; to be played on any saxophone)

Semi-Final Round
(2nd live round held at ISSAC on October 25, 2014):

  • Dorothy Chang: New Stories, movement IV. Folksong (published by the Canadian Music Centre*)

  • Dimitri Terzakis: Der Hölle Nachklang I (Edition Gravis)

* Dorothy Chang's New Stories may be purchased through the Canadian Music Centre. IMPORTANT: All competitors MUST use original copies of this piece. Competitors must actually purchase the piece (do not select the free "loan" copy that is listed as an option on the CMC website). IMPORTANT: Joe Lulloff retains the rights to make the first recording of New Stories. Any competitor who violates this legal agreement between Dorothy Chang and Joe Lulloff will be disqualified from ISSAC 2014 and any future ISSAC and will be subject to legal action.

Final Round (3rd live round held at ISSAC on October 26, 2014):

  • Dan Trueman: Palimpsest - Concerto for alto saxophone and percussion ensemble (this new work was commissioned to be premiered at ISSAC 2014 and will be available for purchase in July, 2014*)

  • J.S. Bach: Sonata for flute and continuo (BWV 1035) (any arrangement; to be played on any saxophone)

  • Choose selections/movements from the following to total 15 minutes of music. Finalists may not duplicate repertoire performed in a previous round:

* Competitors are strictly forbidden to have any communication with Mr. Trueman about this new concerto.
Any competitor who contacts Mr. Trueman will be subject to disqualification from the 2014 ISSAC competition. All questions regarding this concerto should be sent directly to Amy Griffiths, ISSAC Director. The 40 competitors who will compete in the Preliminary Round will purchase this concerto via the Level I competition registration process. Please contact Amy Griffiths, ISSAC Director if you are not among the 40 competitors but wish to purchase this concerto.
