Technology at the Schwob School of Music
The Technology Area at the Schwob School of Music offers both academic courses for music students to pursue creative endeavors using technology, as well as production and consulting services to the Schwob School of Music as a whole.
The minor in audio technology is a unique program designed to offer a rich set of experiences to music students, spanning a wide range of topics in music technology. Practical, hands-on experience is combined with the latest topics in the ever-growing world of music technologies. Students gain experience as recording engineers, live sound engineers, sound designers, composers, and researchers in this diverse field.
The Technology Area regularly interacts with all other areas of the Schwob School, and has provided support for everything from Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble to Contemporary Ensemble. The Technology Area is also the primary sponsor of the Popular Music Ensemble, and maintains close relationships with other organizations like The Loft Recording Studio and Venue, JamGood Mastering, and 88.5 WCUG, and provides students with the opportunity to exercise their skills in a variety of settings.

Recording Studio Policies, 2018-2019
Official Schwob Events
All student, faculty, ensemble, and guest artist performances are automatically added to the recording calendar, providing they are scheduled through the School of Music. Note that this does not include master classes. You can confirm recording of your performance, or a performance by a visiting artist, by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or calling the recording studio directly at 706-649-1900.
Student, Faculty, Ensemble and Guest Artist performances incur no charges for recording or standard production tasks. Standard production tasks include basic track separation, fades, nominal level adjustments, mastering and CD production. In addition, student recitals that need amplification or sound reinforcement will incur a $50 one-time charge to offset the costs of additional audio engineers (see below).
For student recitals, the student will receive one (1) copy of the performance. Staff pianists/accompanists and additional soloists will also receive a copy of the performance.
For faculty performances, each faculty member featured on the recital will receive one (1) copy of the performance, as well as accompanists/collaborators/composers. Please let us know if you are performing a world premiere work, as we will provide copies to composers as well even if they are not in attendance.
For ensemble performances, each conductor featured on the concert will receive one (1) CD. Featured soloists and composers featured on the concerts will also receive one (1). For studio performances, the applied professor will receive one (1) copy. Again, please notify us of world premiere performances (as above).
Copies of all Schwob events, with the exception of student and studio recitals, will also be delivered to the Music Library for archival purposes. Please note that all visiting artist performances will be recorded unless we are notified of the artist's desire to not record. When guest artists sign and return the independent contractor form and letter of agreement, this document contains language that allows CSU to use all recorded performances. Please note this is different than it has been in the past: Recording studio staff will not seek specific releases for guest artists.
Private Recording Sessions
Private audio recording sessions with our engineers are also available. Our staff is capable of handling a variety of project types, and can record in several locations, including Legacy Hall, the Studio Theatre, large ensemble rehearsal rooms, and other locations using portable equipment.
The first step in planning a private recording session is to schedule the space first. This is done through Mr. Tao Ge in the front office. Confirm availability of the desired space with Mr. Ge, then contact Lucas Testin or Nick Williams, the recording studio staff assistants, at email@example.com to schedule an engineer.
While we make every effort to accommodate scheduling requests, sometimes it is simply not possible to schedule an engineer during your booked time. Please be flexible and work one-on-one with us to ensure things are planned in advance.
All recording sessions must be scheduled 7 days in advance. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.
Fees for Private Sessions:
$30 Base Fee (minimum): Includes the first hour of set up/recording/editing which
can be used at the discretion of the client. Any post-production or recording time
beyond the first hour will incur a charge of $25/hr. billed in 15-minute increments.
Contact Dr. McCabe or firstname.lastname@example.org if your recording project is on a budget and needs additional planning before the sessions begin. This is to ensure efficient production and availability of engineers as well as to prevent "creeping sessionitis".
While the studio does not offer video recording services, we will sync audio from a recording we make to video provided by the performer. There is a $25 fee for each clip syncing. Only certain video formats are supported by our programs, please make sure videos are .dv, .photo-jpeg, .h264, or .mp4 as the studio does not provide conversion of video files.
Amplification & Live Sound Reinforcement
All events requiring amplification or live sound reinforcement must be scheduled one month in advance and will incur an additional $50 flat rate charge to offset the cost of additional audio engineers. In addition to this fee, all events requiring amplification MUST have a designated setup time of at least 1 (one) hour where the venue is empty so we can ensure correct setup. Expecting the technology to work effectively and the engineer to create a quality product when the concert hall is full of people making noise is nearly impossible. Please plan accordingly and provide stage plots and channel lists to the recording studio at least one month in advance of the event.
The Music Library at Schwob has several portable video and audio recorders available for checkout. Equipment in the recording studio is not available for checkout and may only be used within the Schwob School of Music building unless supervised by studio staff members.
Please note the recording studio does not provide video services. We can provide a list of contact information for individuals who do this type of work.
Deadlines and Last-Minute Scheduling
All recording sessions not on the master recording calendar (i.e., official Schwob events) must be scheduled 7 days in advance, preferably longer.
Under no circumstances will recording sessions take place on short notice. Please note this policy: We will NOT record with you unless it is scheduled outside of the 7-day advance deadline.
Obtaining Copies of your Recordings
Standard Production time for standard recording services (recital performances, ensemble concerts, and basic sessions as listed above) is 3-4 weeks. Please do not expect to receive a disc at the end of the concert or recording session. This is to ensure both the quality of the recording and to keep pace with our busy production schedule of more than 250 projects per academic year.
If you would like additional copies of your recording, please contact Dr. McCabe and he will open a work order for duplication. Deadlines should be specified if the duplications are time-sensitive. We can also create compilation CDs of completed projects with printed artwork for $5 per disc.
Private session recordings, when completed, can only be delivered via physical media or the Internet after payment has been made.
At the close of a project, an invoice will be generated by the recording engineer, who will review the charges with the client. The invoice should then be taken to Mrs. Debra Tommey, who receives payments on behalf of the Schwob School. CD copies, digital copies, or other materials can be picked up after payment has been received.
Please note we will not provide next-day service for recordings. If you have a deadline, please plan ahead of time. It is nearly impossible to provide a 24-hour turnaround after a session.

Access to the CSU Studios
Students, faculty, and staff members are welcome to make use of our recording facilities when accompanied by a staff member. However, access to the space and equipment must first be approved by Dr. McCabe.
Outside users of the CSU studios are encouraged to bring their own external hard disks or USB flash drives to store data. Since our primary mission is to record official Schwob events, we cannot be responsible for data left on our machines from outside projects.
All of the engineers and technicians who work in our studio spaces must agree to the studio use regulations before using any of the equipment for projects. This includes student employees, faculty members, and students enrolled in classes taught in the studio spaces.
Please see Dr. McCabe for a copy of the regulations and to receive authorization for studio access. Individuals who have not agreed to the studio regulations are not permitted to enter the studio spaces unless escorted by a staff member. Students who have been granted access to the studio spaces may not, under any circumstances, allow their accounts to be used by anyone other than the authorized user. Students who violate this policy will permanently lose their studio privileges.
